My World Tour - Urfa and Harran, Turkey |

Sanliurfa (Urfa). South East turkey, about 100 miles from the Syrian boarder. A pilgrimage city, mostly inhabited by Kurdish people. This is the birthplace of Abraham the prophet (you know, the first one to talk to God, through the burning bush). The cave he was born in is open to walk in to.
Golbasi - Legend had it that Abraham, who is a great Islamic prophet along with the Jews and Christians, was in old Urfa destroying pagan gods one day when Nimrod, the local Assyrian king, took offence at this rash behavior. Nimrod had Abraham immolated on a funeral pyre, but God turned the fine into water and burning coals into fish. Abraham himself was hurled into the air but landed safely in a bed of roses. The area here is a symbolic recreation of this story. Two rectangular pools of water are filled with supposedly sacred carp. Local legend has it that anyone catching the carp will go blind. |
