My World Tour: Maori People, New Zealand |
Back to Home Page to New Zealand Main Page
The Maori people are descended from the south pacific region around 1000 AD. Most of their tribes reside in the north island (it's warmer there) and the Maori language is now an official language of New Zealand with English. The Maoris were and still are to a degree a tribal society. They are a warrior society, and probably didn't get slaughtered like so many of other native people by British because they are so tough (watch them beat the ozzies in Rugby). Their culture has had a revival in recent years and people are learning their native languages that were banned for many years. They are very recognizable around the world from their facial tattoos (men and woman).
