The early history of Portugal goes back to the Celts who settled the Iberian Peninsula around 700 BC.  A subsequent pattern of invasion and reinvasion was established by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Visigoths.  In the 8th century the Moors crossed the Straight of Gibraltar and commenced a long occupation which introduced Islamic culture, architecture and agricultural techniques to Portugal.  The Moors were ejected in the 12th century by powerful Christian forces in the north of the country who mobilized attacks against them with help of the European Crusaders.
