The early history of Portugal goes back to the Celts who settled the Iberian Peninsula around 700 BC.  A subsequent pattern of invasion and reinvasion was established by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Visigoths.  In the 8^th century the Moors crossed the Straight of Gibraltar and commenced a long occupation which introduced Islamic culture, architecture and agricultural techniques to Portugal.  The Moors were ejected in the 12^th century by powerful Christian forces in the north of the country who mobilized attacks against them with help of the European Crusaders.
