We are at 5200 meters at Everest Base Camp, on the Tibet side there is a road to the base camp, which we took.  On the Nepal side, it's a 3 week trek to the base camp.  The air is just as thin on both sides, about 1/2 that of sea level.  There are several monasteries near the base camp and if you can believe it, plenty of Tibetan pilgrims walking up there to pray.
